Are you an Albertan who has been denied disability benefits by your insurance company?
If your insurance company has denied you disability benefits, you may feel like you are out of options and have nowhere to turn. A serious illness or injury could impact your ability to work or prevent you from being able to work entirely. The reality of struggling to pay your bills, support your family, and cope with your condition can be incredibly stressful. But there are legal resources and supports available. An experienced lawyer may be able to get you the compensation you deserve. You do have options, and you don’t have to go through this alone.
At Litco Law, we have helped thousands of clients with their claims in Calgary and throughout Alberta, and we’re here to help you too. We understand how insurance companies work and the tactics they may use to deny, delay, or reduce your insurance claim, such as:
- Claiming you’re not disabled or unfit to work
- Demanding you return to work against your doctor’s advice
- Rejecting your claim for being late or incomplete
- Treating you unfairly or constantly switching claims adjudicators
- Offering you a low settlement or ignoring your claim
- Disputing your medical evidence or sending you to their own doctor
- Closing your claim early or imposing a short appeal period
- Imposing unfair or unreasonable deadlines to fill in forms or see a doctor or specialist
- Accusing you of not following doctor’s orders or doing enough medical treatment
- Providing incomplete or unclear reasons for denying your claim, or outright refusal to pay

Long-term disability benefits are payments that replace a portion of your income when you are unable to work due to a disability. There are different types and sources of long-term disability benefits in Alberta, including:
- Long-term disability insurance, which is a private insurance policy that you may have through your employer, union, or association, or that you may have purchased on your own.
- Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability benefits, which are federal government benefits that you may qualify for if you have contributed to the CPP and meet the eligibility criteria.
- Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), which are provincial government benefits that you may qualify for if you meet the financial and medical criteria.
- Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) benefits, which are provincial government benefits that you may qualify for if your disability is caused by a work-related injury or illness.
- Disability Tax Credit (DTC), which is a federal tax credit that you may qualify for if you have a severe and prolonged impairment that affects your daily living activities.
Each of these benefits has its own rules and requirements, and you may be eligible for more than one type of benefit at the same time. However, some benefits may affect or reduce others, so it is important to understand how they interact and coordinate.
Can I afford a long-term disability lawyer?
Our lawyers work on a contingency basis for claims, and our fee is based on a percentage of the final settlement amount. This means that you won’t pay us anything unless and until your claim is resolved. Our percentage fee is flat, which means that it won’t increase over time. At Litco Law, you will never have to pay out-of-pocket for any legal fees while you have an ongoing claim.Have questions about long-term disability claims in Alberta?
