All the answers you need, for free!

Oct 16, 2024

One of our most frequently asked questions is, “Do you offer free consultations?” The answer is yes! Many people, when they think of lawyers, think of expensive legal fees, high costs, and big bills. And it’s true that many lawyers are paid by the hour and charge high hourly rates. But we do things differently.

At Litco Law, we’ve been changing the way the world thinks about lawyers for over 45 years. Can’t get legal advice on the phone? Feeling nickle-and-dimed for every little step in your legal action? Not at Litco Law. We believe in free consultations and being generous with our time and knowledge. The meter isn’t running. The clock isn’t ticking. Your fees will be fair and transparent, every time.

We offer free consultations for:

At your initial consultation you will meet with a lawyer and perhaps other members of our legal team to address your personal legal challenge. Most consultations last for 30-60 minutes, depending on factors such as the type of legal service required or the complexity of a case. A personal injury lawyer will also assess claims during this meeting to determine if they are likely to be successful.

Consultations can be longer if necessary, to allow the lawyer to gather all the important facts and answer all your questions. Free initial consultations can take place at our offices in either Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Lethbridge, but we also do:

  • House calls;
  • Hospital calls;
  • Phone consultations;
  • Meetings at another convenient location;
  • Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, or other video consultations.

We never bill by the hour. Here’s why.

There’s an underlying worry for many people about being taken advantage of by their lawyer, accountant, mechanic, and the list goes on. After all, billing by the hour inherently provides an incentive to take as long as possible, right? And we get why so many people feel this way. It’s sometimes difficult to know what is a reasonable time frame for your service or exactly how much work is being done behind the scenes.

When you hire a lawyer, you are hiring an advocate, advisor, and ideally someone you can trust. The last thing you should have to worry about is whether or not your bill is a fair reflection of the service you received. And that’s why at Litco Law we never bill clients by the hour. We are committed to making a positive difference for our clients. What does this mean in practice? It means fair and transparent fees, being generous with our time, and always respectful of yours.

Initial Consultations for Personal Injury

Preparing for Your Free Consultation

Prior to meeting, your lawyer may ask you to bring certain important information with you such as:

  • A Police report;
  • Witness statements;
  • Insurance information;
  • Photographs of injuries or the accident location.

You should also come prepared with a list of questions you want the lawyer to answer during the consultation.

We Offer Contingency Fees

All our Calgary Personal Injury Lawyers work on a contingency fee basis. Very simply, this means we don’t get paid until you get paid. In other words, the lawyer’s fees are “contingent” or dependent on successfully recovering money for you by resolving your claim, either through a negotiated settlement or in a court of law.

NOTE: nearly all injury claims in Alberta are resolved without ever having to go to court.

We’ll Cover Your Disbursements

Every legal action costs money, and not just lawyers’ fees. There are always expenses associated with pursuing an injury claim, and these expenses are called disbursements. Disbursements for Personal Injury claims run from hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the severity and complexity of your case. They include things like:

  • Medical reports;
  • Expert witness assessments and reports.
  • A police report for a motor vehicle accident;
  • Treatment charts from doctors and other medical providers; and
  • A land titles search for a slip and fall.

We’ll always cover your disbursements, which means that we pay for those expenses while your claim is ongoing. An experienced Alberta Personal Injury lawyer will likely be able to recover all the disbursements from the insurance company of the person(s) you made the claim against, so you won’t have to pay out of your own pocket.
